1991 Geo Prizm GSi

The white whale of North American Corolla's

The only 4-door Corolla to get the coveted high compression "Red Top" 4AGE in North America...and assembled and sold by GM to add to the confusion.

I always considered these cars to be one of those mythical beasts that everyone loves to tell stories about, but none of which can be backed up with facts because they're simply never seen in person. Not even the internet can supply any info on this incredibly rare and obscure car which comes from the early days of the GM-Toyota partnership born under the guise of the NUMMI plant in California. Don't ask me how, but I somehow managed to get one, and in Barrie Ontario of all places.

Before seeing this car in person, I was under the impression like so many others that this car not only had a red top 4AGE, but also had the only Map-sensored version ever sold on the continent. Turns out that second part is wrong.

From a quick look, the car has your regular every-day high-compression red-top 4AGE complete with AFM; The same engine found in the 1990-91 Corolla GT-S in both Canada and the US. Apparently this engine is rated at 130 hp.

Here's what makes this car so special:

-it is essentially a FWD Toyota Corolla assembled by GM workers at the NUMMI plant in California (A joint venture between Toyota and GM)

-it is built on the same AE92 platform as the 88-92 4-door Corolla sedan and 2-door Corolla GT-S

-although it looks similar to the AE92 Corolla sedan, it's appearance is slightly different since it was sold as a Geo/Chevy product

-they only came in black, with red trim

-limited production (only made for 1-2 years, and in a very small number)

Other features:

-alloy 5-spoke wheels, power windows, power locks, cruise control, A/C, tilt, power sunroof, spoiler, flip-down rear seats, rear disc brakes, door mounted seat belts

-Migs
